Gran Turns 81!

Sunday was my Granny's 81st Birthday! I can't imagine being 81. We question her all the time about her younger years. Her stories are never anything like we expect. 'Cuz, despite the fact that it may have been the 30's and 40's - it wasn't the 30's and 40's that we learn about in school. We learn about Europe and North America, the war and the depression...a very different history to that of a small South American country that was a British colony at the time.

Despite the fact that Gran's had a tough time in the last little while, her birthday was still a celebration. Gran is the most sociable person I know. She has so many friends and is so loved by everyone she meets. Lately she's gotten quieter...her memory is not as good...her hearing is going and I find that sometimes it's difficult for her to even tell a story clearly. But we try to take our time with her.

My granny is the only one I have and the only one I've ever known and lucky for me one of the best. To quote my sister as we toasted to her birthday 'I would say here's to another 81 years...but it would probably really suck to be that old!'
